“There is no limit to improvement, it’s [cycling] a forever sport.”
There are a few people in the world who, when you meet them, you’d never have an idea about amazing things they are doing for the community. That’s called humility, and Becci Neal has an abundance of that. I’ve (Mal) been working at Mojo for about four-and-a-half years, yet only recently, have my eyes been opened to how much Becci does within this community. She never brags about it or even mentions most of it. I asked Dave to give me a list of all she does, before I interviewed her…it took up an entire page. So, now let me tell you a little bit about Becci’s impact on our local community.
Becci got her first mountain bike in 1990, shortly after getting engaged to Dave. It wasn’t until they bought the shop though, that she really started to get into cycling. Currently, she is a K-5 PE elementary teacher in Rogers. It’s her passion for teaching and the joy of seeing others improve as they learn to ride that drives her contributions to the community. When asked to elaborate on the list of her cycling involvement she humbly shrugged, as if her role was minor, “I don’t know, I just have my toe in so many things.”
Becci has done, and continues to do, much for the local cycling-oriented NWA community. Here’s a partial list of her most recent activities: NICA Coach, Little Bellas Volunteer, Women of Oz ride leader/teacher, initiated a Bike Train program for kids riding their bike to school (currently on hold after COVID & now lack of safe routes), and is now part of piloting a new BMX program at Janie Darr. Notice key words like coach, leader, initiated, piloting…Becci’s toe isn’t just “in” the water, she’s a vital part of the greater puddle that is NWA’s cycling community.
You can see, by her involvement, how much she loves teaching. As our conversation came to a close, she continued to emphasize her love for seeing people learn to ride and their joy as they do. Whether they are learning to ride as a kid, at 53, or 82 “there is no limit to improvement, it’s [cycling] a forever sport.”
